U.S. children’s eyesight is worsening, which is leading to dramatic increase in nearsightedness and more serious eye disease in adulthood (National Public Radio, May 13,2024). Dr. Noha Ekdawi, a pediatric ophthalmologist in Wheaton, Illinois advises, "We think that outdoor time is the best form of prevention for nearsightedness." Research suggests that children should spend at least two hours a day outdoors to prevent myopia and other eye ailments. We call upon all members of our South Bend community to support MARA’s efforts to provide safe and fun year around outdoor activities for all of our children.
